{Lieut. Smith was sent to find a less exposed site-
not an easy task in those days with the bridgehead packed tightly with units but he
found a field surrounded by tall trees near the village of Le Mesnil Patry that looked as
though it would give vehicle cover. He led the Troop into this new hide, but things were
no better. They were shelled again that night, the shells splintering on the trees and
peppering the slit trenches below. A despatch rider, Gunner Boyd, was wounded in these
attacks and subsequently died in hospital.
