There are two main types soaring.

The first one is slope soaring. This is when you are on top of a hill or slope and there is a wind blowing into the hillside. You can throw you glider into the wind and it will get its lift from the wind. the diagram below will explain it.

There is another form of lift which is invisible to the sences. This form of lift is called thermals. Thermals are surges of hot air which rise up and push your glider with it . Because thermals are invisible you have to hunt for them! This, for the unexperience piolet, is near imposible but here are a few tips to guide you to likely places to find them near you. Firstly and most obviously thermals will not be very present on wet, cold, snowy or very windy days so the thermaling will have to wait! They will mainly occur on warm days. Thermals can be made on roads as the sun heats surface or playgrounds and parks.A good example of thermals is on a baseball field where the stumps are. The grass has been worn away and the ground heats providing you with a thermal!
