SIR
JOHN BROWN &
OTHERS
These pages contain information about Sir John Brown and some of
his relatives.
Sir John
Brown (1816 - 1896) established the iron and steel business which
carried his
name. Inventor of the conical spring buffer and rolled armour
plate. Pioneer of the use of the Bessemer process.
Twice Master Cutler. Lord Mayor of Sheffield.
Roger Brown
(1804 - 1873), uncle of Sir John Brown, who was "a remarkably well-read
and well-informed man, and very fond of scientific research."
Charles Brown (1800
-1869), also uncle of John and brother of Roger. Known as
"Balloony" Brown, in 1824 he became the second person to make a
balloon ascent from Sheffield.
There are also links to two family trees:
my children's The
Gross line draws heavily on work by
Christopher Haines. The entries for the part of the family
which originally came from Cornwall are derived from
"Descendants of Thomas Reynolds" which was compiled by Robert W
Williams, Livonia, Michigan (1979)
a Brown
family tree
prepared by Jackson in the 1870s which
includes Sir John, Roger and Charles Brown and their ancestors back to
their arrival in Sheffield. The original, which is in
the Sheffield City Archives, is difficult to read, and the
thinness of the paper used by Jackson renders it transparent upon
photocopying. It is, however, a particularly valuable source
because it provides information which would be practically impossible
to establish today for a name as
common as Brown. Jackson's notes, which have been incorporated in
the family tree below, contain references variously to John Brown "now
in Russia with the round silver platter", Joseph Brown "in
Australia" with his wife Mary, John who "died at Philadelphia" and
married Elizabeth Stagg.
