Twinning from Darmstadt, Germany - Wednesday 21st May to Sunday 25th May 2008

The dates for the visit from our guests in Darmstadt are now fixed.  Now is your chance to sense the flavour of twinning through an easy introduction of being a host at all the events.  Nearly all our guests speak good English so your German speaking capabilities can be nil.  The Germans are very keen to visit us, so if you have never participated before you can be assured of a very friendly warm response.  Look at our website http://www.apta.org.uk  for an article on last year's visit.  The provisional programme is as follows:

Wednesday 2lst May 2008:  Travel from Darmstadt

Thursday 22nd  May 2008:  Cultural excursion day.

Friday 23rd May 2008Local technical visit,  lunch, shopping, evening barbecue

Saturday 24th May 2008:  Families day (bike tour and/or walking)

Sunday 25th May 2008:  Travel back to Darmstadt

Twinning to Amiens, France – provisionally BH weekend Friday 22nd Aug - Tuesday 26th Aug 2008

The dates of our visit to Amiens, in the Picardy region of Northern France, have not yet been finalised, but the Bank Holiday weekend has been used on previous occasions.  Amiens is less than two hours drive from Calais.  Now is your chance to experience an easy visit as a guest.  Better still, you could incorporate it as part of your French summer holiday arrangements this year.  There will be a full programme of activities for the few days.  Please advise Tony as soon as possible of your intent to join us so that all the guests can be orgamised well in advance.  No prior experience is necessary.  Look at our website http://www.apta.org.uk  for an article on last year's visit.

French lessons - lunchtime at Adastral Park – all year

The new term has just started.  The classes run over lunchtime from 12.15 - 1.15pm and are in the admin block second floor conference room.  The classes are fairly informal, based around a theme and led by Kate Pirkis (Pirkis1@aol.com 01473 737257) from Suffolk College.  I think the level is about GSCE to early A level, but there is a wide range of abilities.  Beginners class is on Wednesday and intermediate on Thursday.  Everyone welcome.

Language courses – Europe – all year2008 courses (2008 not yet available, 2007 shown by example)

There are formal residential language courses held from time to time organised by Eurojumelages, the international organisation.  Apply to the local co-ordinator, not the secretariat.   Tony can provide email addresses for each country.   ( EuroJumelages,  57 rue de la Colonie, F-75013 Paris, France.  Tel: +33 1 53 62 20 30, Fax: +33 1 53 62 11 66, email: uijpt@wanadoo.fr  )  See the web: http://www.eurojumelages.eu

Azureva Holiday Villages - all year

These are PTT holiday villages run on commercial lines but subsidised for French Post and Telecoms people as well as foreign twinners.  www.azureva-vacances.com  There are individual and group availabilities at forty locations in France.   The Summer/Autumn catalogue is now available and bookings may be made via the PO Fellowship of Remembrance, tel: 01483 424929.

Vacances Actives – Mediterranean and Atlantic coast seaside resorts.  www.vacances-actives.com

Loisirs Vacances Tourisime – countryside location resorts.  www.lvt-veacances.com

RelaiSoleil Vacances - mountain resorts.  www.relaisoleil.com

These are very similar to Azureva above but seem to be good value commercial organisations.

BT International Twinning Federation

This exists to provide a cohesive link amongst the local groups to provide a unified national approach.  There is a publication called "Eurotwin" that is copied and distributed upon receipt.  It contains information on language courses, holiday villages, ski holidays and international conferences, events in which many of our members have taken part.  Eileen Willis represented us at the BTITF AGM in September 2006..   The 2007 AGM is yet to be held.

New twinning links:  If you wish to initiate a link with a new country then please speak to the committee.

Pen Friends:  A request has been made by a number of French, Spanish and Romanian teenagers for English pen friends.

Student  exchanges:  These can be arranged.

Eurotwin:  This provides an overview of all the UK twinning activities.  Normally there is a submission of our twinning exchange activities.

Pen Pals:  There is a current request for a pen pal from a 12 year-old French girl.

Socials:   Social activities are arranged from time to time but mainly in association with other twinning events.

Publicity:   The Adastral Hub site restaurant has posters, latest newsletter and latest copy of Eurotwin.  The Amigo notice-board has a copy of the latest newsletter.

BT intranet “Twinning” web site:   We now have several pages allocated for the above giving the background, aims, and activities and the names and contact details for each EC member and each group.

The Adastral Park sports and leisure site can be found at: http://www.atadastral.co.uk/Leisure/Clubs.asp and then selecting ‘Twinning’, but this will relay you to Mark’s external site.
