Ipswich And Melton 1/12 Stock Car club |
||
| 1/12th Stock Car and Hot Rod Racing (Mardave V-Series)
has established a firm foothold in the Suffolk area, with the Ipswich &
Melton Club going from strength to strength. "Home" is a social club (complete
with bar!), with a 40 foot carpet oval and club racers come from as far afield
as Lowestoft and beyond Colchester to race. Meetings take place every Tuesday
evening and there are also monthly "letting hair down,' sessions, when the
Bangers are let loose, complete with balsa wood caravans!
There are a sprinkling of Sunday meetings on the fixture list when the neighbouring clubs of Cambridge and Basildon come across to do battle. The latest encounters featured the "East Anglian Championship,' trophies and a grand total of 64 entries. Having beaten Cambridge "promoter" Martin Cooper in the weekly Stock Car final a few days earlier, Ipswich "promoter" Kevin Wegg had high hopes of making it a double in the Championship final. "Pinky" had other ideas however, as too Ipswich school-boy racer Jason Burrows. The latter only just made the final after winning the consolation event but had a tremendous dice with Pinky and finished level on laps completed, only missing out on the title on total elapsed time. Kevin completed the rostrum line-up.
Much to the "annoyance" of the locals and the amusement of "Pinky", he completed a double by lifting the Hot Rod title as well. Again, he was pushed all the way (not literally, of course), with Clive Day (Ipswich) and Jon Sellwood (Colchester) right behind him. A hat-trick was duly completed in the "tongue-in-cheek" Robin Reliants, where the designer of this formula took the flag with his name-sake Tracy in runners-up spot. The supporting Banger action featured a huge turn-out of 4-a-side teams and not surprisingly, some decidedly hairy action along the way. Once the scores were totted up, it was Pinkbridge (Cambridge) and the Stingers (Basildon) that fought out a head-to-head final. Despite being a car short, the Stingers put up a brave fight, but finally succumbed. With the result decided by total laps scored, and the winning margin slightly less than the average score per driver, the result might well have been different had they had a full line~up...... But to the "horror" of all concerned, that man Pinky had won yet again, thanks in no small way of course to team-mates Tracy, Brian Cave and school-boy Matthew Sheppard.
Finally, in the individual Banger event, Basildon promoter Alec Quarman ensured that a home victory was again scuppered, with Ipswich schoolboys Jason Thurlow and Peter Fisk doing well to beat a host of far more senior competitors.
