It is very tempting to embark upon a ‘do you remember’ amble but I guess that each of us has one or two stories to tell - with the risk of slight embellishment or minor adjustment to details which tend to be a bit fuzzy round the edges.
So, submitting to temptation, I well remember the emotional trauma of morning assembly. Nothing to do with the sanctity of the hymn or being singled out for some completely unintentional wrong -doing but all to do with where one stood in the three lines of form-mates. Again nothing to do with whom one was standing next to. The cunning plan was to position yourself so that at the end of assembly as the girls and the boys walked to the back of the hall you were next to the current love of your life!! The walk in paradise was only about five yards until the girls peeled off right and the boys peeled off left.
In my case only my crimson blushing would give the girl of my dreams any clue - she probably did not know of my existence! (Quiet sigh of resignation !)
The down-side of this scheming and very short-lived triumph was a cruel ribbing once back in class. But it was worth it!!
Best wishes to all 1950 5th years, long may we dream and remember.
