13/8/99 MEMORIES of Central School prove to be thick on the ground.
JOAN C SANTLER (nee Bennett), of Links Way,
Croxley Green,
Rickmansworth.
Writes:

I am writing in response to your Nostalgia photograph in The Watford Observer, dated 2.7.99, of the class of 1947 at Watford Central School.

I was then Joan Bennett (first on the left, back row). As you can see I still live in the area and know a few "girls" whom I still see from time to time. I can remember the names of all of the pupils except one.

The teacher was Miss Rice, who was a maths teacher and very strict, as were all the staff. I wonder how many of the pupils on the photograph are still around Watford? It is so difficult to trace ladies as I expect most of them will have married and changed their names - at least once!

Considering we had all suffered the privations of the Second World War, we all look pretty healthy and, as far as I can remember, we were pretty tough.

There must be an equivalent photograph of the boys from the same era; perhaps some of them are still around but, of course, we were not allowed to speak to them or fraternise in any way, although there were secret liaisons! Nothing has changed that much.

I await with interest to see if any more of the class respond. It would be nice to hear how the past 50-odd years have treated them.

Middle row, left to right: Cannot remember, June Atkins, Jean Templeman, Margaret Ford, Marian Foxman, Betty White, Yvonne Payne, Patricia (Bobbie) Lewin, Barbara Collins.

Front row, left to right: Shirley Howard, Mary Beasley, Christine Robbins, Betty Hague, June Pooley, Miss Rice (teacher), Audrey Smith, Jean Legg, Joyce Eames, Pamela Covey, Jacqueline Jones.
