MRS JUNE EDWARDS of Gonville Avenue,
Croxley Green,
Writes:

I was June Atkins at the Central School in Watford from 1942 to 1947. I am in the second row, the second from the left.

Four girls from St Marys Church School in Rickmansworth passed for the Central School. They were Marion Gatehouse, top row last on the right, Mary Beasley, front row, second from the left, and Shirley Howard, first in the front row.

We travelled to school on the train from Church Street, Rickmansworth, which went to Watford High Street Station.

Every day we would walk in line to Sotheron Road to a canteen where we had dinner and pudding cooked for us.

Every sports afternoon we walked down Water Lane to Greatham Road to our sports field, and for our swimming lessons we walked to the baths at the Town Hall.

Mr Lilliman was my headmaster, Miss Parr my geography teacher, Miss Rice, in the centre in the picture, was my maths teacher.

We had a good education at the Central School and even learnt shorthand and typing in our last two years, setting us up for working girls.

I still hear from Mary Beasley and I see Ivy Ingle, top row, third from left, because we are now both bowlers. I play for Croxley and she plays for Abbots Langley and we have often talked about our old school days.

Thank you for printing this photograph.
