22/5/98 The CENTRAL SCHOOL, Watford. Can anyone reveal what happened to it and do they have any particular memories of it?

TOM JONES, of Meadow Way,
Rickmansworth.
Writes:

In 1950, Watford Central School moved to Aldenham Road, Bushey, and was renamed Bushey Grammar School.

We, the pupils, changed to the co-ed system (the first such grammar school in Hertfordshire?)

Sadly, the system rejected most (all but six) of the old teachers.

I consider with Watford Central we lost old facilities (remember the toilets, also walking to lunch and the playing fields)?

Old-style discipline: (I had two years of this), a lot of good teachers, sound education and tradition. With Bushey Grammar we gained new and good facilities.

Apparently, Bushey Grammar School never achieved sufficient excellence or respect to stay a grammar school - it later became Queens' (comprehensive) School.

I think that Derby Road became an RC primary school.
