Bicentennial Man
1999 film directed by
Chris Columbus
A happy/sad story of an android
called Andrew (played by Robin Williams) who is the only sentient robot on the
planet (I assume due to a freak accident). The story unfolds over 200 years,
from the time Andrew is purchased by a family, through a period of
understanding of what it is to be human (including falling in love), to
installing synthetic human parts and wanting human rights including the
right to die.
[A familiar story i.e. Tin Man - Wizard of Oz,
Pinochio, Data in Star Trek etc].
Galatea is a female Android (Gynoid perhaps) also seen
throughout the film, but as a sort of dumb blond.
The Storyline was taken from a
novel titled 'The Positronic Man' co-written by Asimov and Robert Silverberg
- originally written as a short story by Isaac Asimov titled the 'Bicentennial
Man'.

Bomb 20
from the cult
sci-fi film Dark
Star ©
1974 Image Films
made by John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon
The film is about a
space ship and crew whose mission is to locate habitable planetary systems and,
if necessary, make them safe by destroying any rogue unstable planets using one
of the ship's 20 intelligent "thermo-stellar" bombs. The crazed
crew have been in space for three years (there relative time) and with the
captain cryogenically frozen (but still available for a chat!), the ship is in desperate need
of repair, and with only one bomb left, the mission is nearing its end.
The ships computer 'Mother' decides to malfunction and falsely orders bomb 20 to
prepare for detonation; the order is countermanded by acting captain Doolittle
and the bomb returns to the bomb bay. However, on the third false order
from 'Mother', bomb 20 decides it's not going to return to the bomb bay this
time but instead wishes to fulfill its destiny and explode! The crew,
somehow, need to convince bomb 20 to disarm itself............
The moral of this story is "don't give a bomb AI"

this mean that the inhabitants of the domed city are eating human flesh? The
film does not elaborate, I'm afraid).

There are specialist versions like 'SID', used for Side-Impact testing and even Virtual

There are rumors that the 'Aliens' found at Roswell were crash test dummies.

Cybermen
Created for the BBC 'Doctor Who' UK TV series
Cybermen are biomechanical men from
Mondas, a planet that originally existed in our solar system a long long time
ago.... Initially humanoid, the people of Mondas replaced various body parts with
robotic implants thus losing their humanity. Cybermen reproduce by converting other
humanoids into faithful copies of themselves. (Sounds familiar? It is -
see the 'Borg' from StarTrek). The Cybermen appeared alongside the first Dr Who in 'The Tenth
Planet' and reappeared in several further Dr Who adventures e.g. 'Tomb of the
Cybermen' (1967), 'Attack of the Cybermen', 'Revenge of the Cybermen' and finally
'Silver

The character 'Apollo'
explained the Cylons best:
"They're not like us. They're machines created by living creatures a long,
long time ago... a race of reptiles called Cylons. After a while the Cylons
discovered humans were the most practical form of creature in this system.
So they copied our bodies, but they built them bigger and stronger than we
are. And they can exchange parts so they can live forever... There are no
more real Cylons. They died off thousands of yahrens ago, leaving behind a
race of super-machines, but we still call them Cylons".

Dalek
Created for the Doctor Who TV series (UK)
and appeared in the Film 'Doctor Who and the Daleks' (1967 BBC Productions).
The Daleks first appearing in the second Dr Who TV story 'The Daleks' (a.k.a.
'The
Dead Planet' and 'The Mutants') 1963 and 1964,
Although not strictly robots, Daleks certainly looks the part.
A Dalek is a bio-mechanical being from the planet Skaro, a planet devastated by a war
which raged for a thousand years, poisoning the planet, and mutating its inhabitants....
In the original history, the war was fought between the Dals and the Thals. Radiation
caused both races to mutate and become disfigured -- the Dals retreating into metal shells
and becoming Daleks, while the Thals came full circle, eventually becoming a race of
physically perfect individuals. Dalek history was re-written by Terry Nation in his 1975
story Genesis of the Daleks. In this new history, it is the Kaleds, not the Dals,
who become Daleks, after a thousand years of war with the Thals. A physically deformed mad
scientist called Davros, after genetic experiments on his own people, created the
Kaled mutants which he then placed in war machines. The result was the Daleks,
creatures
driven by hate and the desire to exterminate all who oppose them.....
There are many
different incarnations of the Dalek - here will be a list...................
