Bender (actual name Bender  Bending Rodriguez) lives in 3000AD with his best friend Fry. Bender is a 4 year old Mexican steel girder bending robot. He's an "'in your face" guy who doesn't care who he offends; he only looks out for number one. Bender is made of Titanium and 40% zinc. He drinks alcohol because apart from getting him drunk, it will keep his fuel cells charged. Without alcohol, he can become sober and uncontrollable. His favorite thing to do apart from smoking cigars and drinking is stealing; he steals because he can, and he's damn good at it.

Bicentennial Man           1999 film directed by Chris Columbus

A happy/sad story of an android called Andrew (played by Robin Williams) who is the only sentient robot on the planet (I assume due to a freak accident). The story unfolds over 200 years, from the time Andrew is purchased by a family, through a period of  understanding of what it is to be human (including falling in love), to installing synthetic human parts and wanting  human rights including the right to die.
[A familiar story i.e. Tin Man - Wizard of Oz, Pinochio, Data in Star Trek etc].

Galatea is a female Android (Gynoid perhaps) also seen throughout the film, but as a sort of dumb blond.

The Storyline was taken from a novel titled 'The Positronic Man' co-written by Asimov and  Robert Silverberg - originally written as a short story by Isaac Asimov titled the 'Bicentennial Man'.

Bishop From the film Aliens (also see Ash)

Black Hole Robots  black_hole_robots.jpg (6950 bytes) - Copyright Walt Disney - film 1979

The Palomino crew are helped free by V.I.N.CENT and his new found friend B.O.B a similar but much abused 'old timer' robot. B.O.B makes a heroic final sacrifice and the U.S.S Cygnus falls into the black Hole......weird images then ensue. See also V.I.N.CENT

Characters: Pris, Roy Batty, Zhora, Rachael, Leon, Little Kyser and Tyrell's owl, are the artificial beings. Bomb 20  bomb20.jpg (56576 bytes) from the cult sci-fi film Dark Star © 1974 Image Films made by  John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon

The film is about a space ship and crew whose mission is to locate habitable planetary systems and, if necessary, make them safe by destroying any rogue unstable planets using one of the ship's 20 intelligent "thermo-stellar" bombs. The crazed crew  have been in space for three years (there relative time) and with the captain cryogenically frozen (but still available for a chat!), the ship is in desperate need of repair, and with only one bomb left, the mission is nearing its end.
The ships computer 'Mother' decides to malfunction and falsely orders bomb 20 to prepare for detonation; the order is countermanded by acting captain Doolittle and the bomb returns to the bomb bay. However, on the third  false order from 'Mother', bomb 20 decides it's not going to return to the bomb bay this time but instead wishes to fulfill its destiny and explode!  The crew, somehow, need to convince bomb 20 to disarm itself............
The moral of this story is "don't give a bomb AI"

Borg or The Borg - Star Trek 2nd Generation, Voyager and the film 'First Encounter'
Biomechanical or cybernetic beings.  Cyborgs are biological entities, usually humanoid in appearance that have been assimilated into the Borg collective (a sort of neural net I suppose). Not Robots or Androids but included for completeness.

Box  box.jpg (26452 bytes) - from the film 'Logan's Run' 1976
In a perfect world where no-one is allowed to live past the age of 30, Logan (played by Michael York) and a beautiful girl called Jessica (played by Jenny Agutter), do a runner. During their escapade they meet Box, a robot food processor that lives in an icy cave; His supply of food has dried up long ago, so for job satisfaction, Box prepares and freezes runners (does this mean that the inhabitants of the domed city are eating human flesh? The film does not elaborate, I'm afraid). Box voice

Cadbury's Smash Martians  smash.jpg (9946 bytes)  Smash 2.jpg (7878 bytes) 1974 Created by BMP DDB Advertising agency
Funny little 'Martians' that laughed at us humans for eating real potatoes! They starred in the Cadbury's Smash (powdered mashed potatoes) advertisement created by BMP UK advertising agency.
Not  referred to as robots, but as far as I'm concerned they are robotic little guys (perhaps they where Martian robots )
Chris Stocker, a graphic designer in Bath recently recreated the little fella's in 3D (as the originals are beginning to fall apart!)

Chris kindly sent me some pictures - here's one

Cog   cog.jpg (16020 bytes)  A.I experimental robot created at the MIT (Massachusetts' Institute of Technology) USA in 1994.
Cog is the brainchild of Rodney Brookes and was formed from a project to build an Artificial intelligence robot. Cog was coined from the word 'cognition' meaning 'acquiring of knowledge. From cognitum - to understand, learn'.
Cog, a test bed for machine interaction with the real world, weighs in at 1 tonne, is nearly 2 metres tall and is in a constant state of 'evolution'..

Crash test dummies  Dum_fam.jpg (27882 bytes) (Not the band!)
A group of vinyl and rubber, sensor rich mannequins that have selfishly saved thousands of lives by being 'accident-prone'. Crash dummies provide vital crash impact information that enable designers to produce  safer cars, planes, prams, etc. for us humans.
There are specialist versions like 'SID', used for Side-Impact testing and even Virtual dummies that only exist inside a computer (my wife thinks I'm one!).
There are rumors that the 'Aliens' found at Roswell were crash test dummies.

Cybermen   cybermen.jpg (43784 bytes)   cyberman.jpg (44767 bytes) Created for the BBC 'Doctor Who' UK TV series
Cybermen are biomechanical men from Mondas, a planet that originally existed in our solar system a long long time ago.... Initially humanoid, the people of Mondas replaced various body parts with robotic implants thus losing their humanity. Cybermen reproduce by converting other humanoids into faithful copies of themselves. (Sounds familiar? It is - see the 'Borg' from StarTrek). The Cybermen appeared alongside the first Dr Who in 'The Tenth Planet' and reappeared in several further Dr Who adventures e.g. 'Tomb of the Cybermen' (1967), 'Attack of the Cybermen', 'Revenge of the Cybermen' and finally 'Silver Nemsis'.

Cylon Centurion    - From the TV series and film/movies ' Battlestar Galactica' - American  TV 1978 and became a Universal City Studios production.
"Fleeing from the Cylon tyranny, the last Battlestar, Galactica, leads a ragtag, fugitive fleet, on a lonely quest -- for a shining planet known as Earth."
The character 'Apollo' explained the Cylons best:
"They're not like us. They're machines created by living creatures a long, long time ago... a race of reptiles called Cylons. After a while the Cylons discovered humans were the most practical form of creature in this system. So they copied our bodies, but they built them bigger and stronger than we are. And they can exchange parts so they can live forever... There are no more real Cylons. They died off thousands of yahrens ago, leaving behind a race of super-machines, but we still call them Cylons".
There appears to be two types of Cylon robot:

Cylon Centurions. The subservient battle hardened silver androids resembling humanoids in  armour. Listen ["By your command"]
IL series robots.    Highly intelligent androids who physically resembles the original Cylon species; three in particular are: 'Lucifer', 'Spectre', and the Imperious Cylon Leader.

Dalek  daleks1.jpg (34681 bytes) Created for the Doctor Who TV series (UK) and appeared in the Film 'Doctor Who and the Daleks' (1967 BBC Productions).
The Daleks first appearing in the second Dr Who TV story 'The Daleks' (a.k.a. 'The Dead Planet' and 'The Mutants') 1963 and 1964,
Although not strictly robots, Daleks certainly looks the part.
A Dalek is a bio-mechanical being from the planet Skaro, a planet devastated by a war which raged for a thousand years, poisoning the planet, and mutating its inhabitants.... In the original history, the war was fought between the Dals and the Thals. Radiation caused both races to mutate and become disfigured -- the Dals retreating into metal shells and becoming Daleks, while the Thals came full circle, eventually becoming a race of physically perfect individuals. Dalek history was re-written by Terry Nation in his 1975 story Genesis of the Daleks. In this new history, it is the Kaleds, not the Dals, who become Daleks, after a thousand years of war with the Thals. A physically deformed mad scientist  called Davros, after genetic experiments on his own people, created the Kaled mutants which he then placed in war machines. The result was the Daleks, creatures driven by hate and the desire to exterminate all who oppose them.....
There are many different incarnations of the Dalek - here will be a list...................

Dy.Na.Mo.  From the Cartoon Network series Powerpuff Girls episode 13 "Uh Ho Dynamo" .
Dy.Na.Mo stands for Dynamic Nanotechntronic Monobot:  Fearing for the girls safety, the professor builds a robot to help them out....Actually a  semi automatic 'mecha', which the girls pilot; when DyNaMo flies, it's hair rotates and it's feet glow (a parody of  Star Trek ships going into warp (apparently PowerPuff episodes have lots of hidden references to pop culture - link)). The proffessor eventually dismantles Dy.Na.Mo; however, in a later episode he uses the artificially intelligent neural network 'brain' (a tiny two inch cube) to power 'Dinah' a new cousin for the girls.........Then a puppy.........then a.......

Frankenstein  The Book 1817 - Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and films 1910 on
Not a robot, but perhaps one of the first ideas that mankind could create a living entity. Constructed from dead tissue and given life by Dr Frankenstein with the aid of a few volts from a passing lightning storm....
Mary had the creation destroy the creator thus setting some sort of robot trend!
Incidentally Shelley was my mothers maiden name!
