She loved to sing from a very early age, and her parents encouraged her to take part in various competitions across the country. Her father helped to train her voice, and the story goes that he submerged her neck-deep in the sea to strengthen her voice. It certainly worked! She won 67 out of 200 local and national contests - pretty impressive! Regine wasn't to stop there. She entered the Bagong Kampeon competition, and won with a beautiful performance of the classic "In Your Eyes". After this amazing win, Octo Arts International signed Regine for a recording contract. Sadly, her first single was not to be an amazing success. However, things started to look up on the show 'Penthouse Live'. Not only did the show change her name from childhood nickname Chona to Regine, it also introduced her to Ronnie Henares who became her manager. Under his guidance, she released her debut album "Regine" to rave reviews in 1987. She began touring and promoting the album. Her star had truly started to shine. Next, she headed off to the Asia Pacific Singing Contest in Hong Kong, and represented the Philippines singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going". Her amazing performances of these songs led to her winning first prize, and now the whole of Asia was beginning to succumb to her charms. The albums 'Nineteen90', 'Tagala Talaga', 'Retro' and 'Reason Enough' followed, all being huge successes. Then in 1994 came 'Listen Without Prejudice', which featured the massive Asian smash-hit duet with Jacky Cheung "In Love With You". The album became huge all across Asia, and was followed by 'My Love Emotion' - the title track of which was written by Phil Buckle. The album featured an a cappella version of the classic "Perfect", performed with The Tux. After her Christmas album in 1996, Regine released 'Drawn' in 1998. The album included songs written by Shanice and Mark Feist, and a cover of "Emotion". The song was later to be covered by Destiny's Child - who's version is very similar to Regine's, not to mention produced by the same guy! After 'Very Special' and 'R2K' came live album 'Songbird Sings The Classics', which featured unforgettable versions of classic songs by Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra and Jaques Brel among others. And then in 2001 there was 'Reigne', the album that Regine says is her most personal yet. It contains 17 original songs and just 1 cover, written by many of the Philippines top songwriters. Regine hasn't only been making beautiful music, she's also been starring in many hit movies! It started in 1987 with "The Untouchable Family" and her career since then has been full of highs such as "Wanted: Perfect Mother", "Honey Nasa Langit Na Ba Ako?", "Do Re Mi", "Ikaw Lamang, Hanggang Ngayon" and "Pangako Ikaw Lang" among many others. In addition to all this, Regine has also had a successful TV presenting career, with SOP and Star For A Night both being major ratings winners. Regine is currently working on new material - an album of songs by the legendary composer Michael LeGrande.
