Report from The Scribe:
Millwall are a strong fast side, and started the game brightly. They also had the advantage of kicking down the slope in the first half. After about 10 minutes, they won a corner and played it to the near post, where their player pushed a Reading defender out of the way and headed it into the net. The referee blew up and disallowed the goal but instead of the free-kick I was expecting, he gave a penalty for an incident somewhere near the penalty spot. Millwall scored this to take a 1-0 lead.
About ten minutes later, they got another penalty after a defender had dealt with a cross by taking the player out. This one was saved by Simon Cox, diving to his right, and that seemed to inspire Reading as for the rest of the game we were at least Millwall's equals and probably shaded the play.
Nathan Tyson was giving the Millwall defence a lot of trouble (not always legally as he was putting in some niggly tackles). Shortly before half-time, Tyson won the ball off the Millwall right back and fought off a challenge that should have led to a penalty. Instead he clashed (fairly) with the keeper, leaving both of them on the ground, but Tyson was able to knock the ball across to Joey Alcott, who tapped it into the empty net.
In the rest of the game Reading had some good chances that we failed to convert, whilst Millwall had a couple of opportunities. The other main incident of the match occurred five minutes before the end, when Tyson was fouled just inside the Millwall half after we had cleared the ball out of defence. This led to a wrestling match, where a Millwall player had his arm around Tyson's neck and eventually all 22 players were involved in one of those "handbags at ten paces" brawls. The referee calmed the situation down by talking to Tyson, Tonna and a Millwall player, and the game came to a quiet conclusions.
Overall, it was an entertaining match played in bright sunshine, with a good performance from Reading showing a marked improvement over previous games against Millwall's Academy sides. The whole Reading management team were there to watch, as well.
