Match report:
By a guest reporter:
Reading's youth side progressed to the third round and a long away game at the winners of Halifax v Blackpool in a game played at a ferocious pace.
It seemed for a spell that Reading had 12 players on their side as the ref gave some strange decisions their way. Reading had some half-chances but never really played well all night, and were given some frights as Simon Cox had to be alert to continually sweep outside his box.
At half-time it was 0-0. The second half saw Reading initially assert some authority and create chances with Louie Soares going close. Then Southend had their only clear chance as the pacey Smith went clear and Cox did well to turn onto the post. Reading went straight up the other end and Soares scored a fine goal latching onto a Laidler through-ball to beat the home keeper. The second came after a mazy run from Jason Awbery, his ball into the box being turned past his own keeper by Laws
Final score - Southend 0 Reading 2. Not a vintage performance but Reading's older players were the difference. One player to note - Andre Boucaud, a trialist from QPR came on, for the out-of-sorts Simion Howell and was eye-catching.
