Academy Matches 2001/02

Matches below where there is a pyramid icon () include a match report. Other links to Under-19 and Under-17 games will probably show the team line-up and scorers. Links to games at other age groups are likely to only show goalscorers. Except for the Under-17s and Under-19s, updates of results are likely to be patchy.

Home Academy games take place at Cantley Park in Wokingham. For all age groups, kick-off is usually at 11am. Confirmed kick-off times for all Under-19 and Under-17 games will appear below by Wednesday of each week.

Under-19

The 2001/02 FA Premier Academy League for the Under-19 age group was meant to consist of four groups, each with ten teams. However, Peterborough United withdrew at a late stage and so there were only 39 teams in total.

We were in Group A with Arsenal, Bristol City, Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Millwall, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Wimbledon. We played those nine teams twice each (home and away) plus nine matches against teams from other groups, making 27 games in all.

There were play-offs for the group winners at the end of the season. These consisted of a semi-final and a two-legged final.

Under-18

Although Reading do not run an Under-18 side as such, the FA Youth Cup is for Under-18s. The format is roughly the same as for the FA Cup - Premiership and Division 1 clubs are exempt to the 3rd round, Division 2 and 3 clubs (including Reading, of course) are exempt to the 1st round, and there are qualifying rounds for non-league clubs.

A change for this season was that there were no replays in the F.A. Youth Cup. If a match was level at the end of 90 minutes, extra time (with no golden goal rule) and if necessary a penalty shoot-out determined the winner.

Under-17

The 2001/02 FA Premier Academy League for the Under-17 age group was meant to consist of four groups, each with nine teams. However, Peterborough United withdrew at a late stage and so there were only 35 teams in total.

We were in Group A with Arsenal, Bristol City, Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace, Millwall, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Wimbledon. We should have played those eight teams twice each (home and away) plus eight matches against teams from other groups, making 24 games in all. However, one of our games was meant to be against Peterborough, and so that was replaced with an additional home game against Crystal Palace.

There was a play-off series across all groups at the end of the season. This consisted of three play-off games before teams qualified for knockout rounds ending in a two-legged final. In a change for 2001/02 the three play-off groups had one team from each of the four groups so that we could in theory have ended up playing against any other club (in 2000/01 it was regionalised by North and South at that stage).

Under-15

Although Reading obviously want to win every match that we play, note that at this age group the performance is far more important. Also either team might include players from a younger age group, or on trial, so that the results should not be given great importance.

Some (perhaps all) of the games below were for mixed Under-15 and Under-16 sides.
