Football Quiz - Answers

Q: Which three players have played in derbies in Merseyside, London and Manchester? (NB This question originates from early 1990, so there will be other players who have managed this feat since then.)
A: Brian Kidd (for Manchester United and Manchester City, Everton, Arsenal), Michael Robinson?, ?

Thanks to Anders Torgersen, for pointing out Brian Kidd as one of the answers.

Michael Robinson certainly played in London derbies for Queens Park Rangers. He also played for Manchester City in the 1979/80 season, and for Liverpool from August 1983 to December 1984, but I don't know for certain if he appeared in derby matches for those two clubs. I am sure that he was one of the original three answers I heard back in 1990.

Dean Leyland has suggested Andy King - he's not the right answer to the question but he was the third name that I was given in 1990 when originally trying to answer it.

Because the question comes from early 1990, the original three answers did not include Peter Reid as this was before he had joined Manchester City. However he did manage to play in all three types of derby (for Everton, Queens Park Rangers, Manchester City).

Also, Paul Walsh has played in all three (thanks to Paul Wicks for being the first person to point that out to me). However, he did not complete the set until after joining Manchester City in 1994, having previously played at Charlton Athletic, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Peter Ling pointed out that Mark Hughes (Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea) and Paul Ince (Manchester United, Liverpool and West Ham United) have both done this more recently. Those two names are so obvious that I can't believe that no-one else spotted it!

Paul Stewart did not play in a Manchester derby. His first game for Manchester City was during the 1986/87 season, but two weeks after their last game that season against Manchester United. His only other season at Manchester City was 1987/88 when they were in Division 2 (and there weren't any Manchester Cup derbies in that season). He did however manage to score all four goals in the two games against Reading that season. Bastard.

Terry Phelan played in London derbies for Wimbledon and in at least one Manchester derby for Manchester City. However, he never played in a Merseyside derby, even though he spent some years at Everton.

Neither Imre Varadi nor John Gidman ever played for London clubs, so did not managed to play in all three types of derby.

This question sometimes asks for players who have appeared in each of a Manchester, Merseyside and North London derby. Of the players above, only Brian Kidd and Paul Walsh have managed that.
