The following is a complete list of penalty shoot-outs involving Reading. In the tables the team in the first column are the ones who took the first penalty (unless it states that I do not know which team this was), and the running score shows that team's total first.
History
The first football competition in the world to include a penalty shoot-out as part of the rules to settle a drawn game was the 1970/71 Watney Mann Inviitation Cup (normally referred to as the Watney Cup). Reading were in the competition that season but missed the opportunity to take part in the first ever shoot-out by losing 3-2 to Manchester United in the quarter-final. In fact, it was Hull City who lost 4-3 on penalties to Manchester United in the next round in the first ever shoot-out.

Overall Record
In first team fixtures, Reading's record in
penalty shoot-outs is therefore:
P7 W4 L3 F24 A25
Including the reserve team and FA Youth Cup
matches, our record is:
P9 W4 L5 F31 A35
Golden Goal
As far as I know, only one Reading game has ever been settled by a golden goal - on 18/1/2000, Keith Scott scored in the 94th minute against Barnet at Underhill in round 2 of the Associate Members Cup to win the game 2-1 for Reading.
The golden goal has now been removed from the laws of the game, so there's not going to be another one.
Extra Time
Eventually, Id like to create a page showing all instances where Reading took part in extra time - however, this will be a lot of work and will undoubtedly be incomplete, so for the time beng it's still on the shelf.
