Reading play Peterborough on Saturday, 16th September. The Football League have stated that any club who thinks that their fixture can't go ahead this weekend has until Friday to let them know. Assuming that our game remains on (and there is absolutely no reason to call it off), then let's have none of this whining from people about being unable to get there due to not being able to use a car.
Let's face it, this should be a game worth going to, following the two big home victories over Brentford and Oldham. We also won our last away game at Port Vale, so it must be worth making that extra effort to get there.
For the benefit of all those who are not used to public transport, it is very easy to get from Reading to Paddington by train, simple to get from Paddington to Kings Cross by Underground (Circle or Metropolitan lines with no changes), easy to get to Peterborough from Kings Cross, and their ground is much less than a mile from the station.
There are three or four trains an hour from Reading to London taking about 30 minutes. Trains leave Kings Cross for Peterborough on the hour, at ten minutes past the hour, and half past the hour, taking 44 minutes to get there. Unless you're looking to spend extended time in either London or Peterborough, I'd recommend leaving Reading station at around 10:55 (although any time up to about noon should do).
A return ticket from Reading is £34, but you can make the journey cheaper by buying a day return from Reading to London (£10.10), a return Underground ticket to get to Kings Cross (£3), and then a day return from London to Peterborough (£19). In fact if you catch a slow train from London to Peterborough (and back again) you can get a return for the last part of the journey for £15.10 but it does takes 80 minutes, there are only two trains an hour and you have to be certain that you're on the right train.
For the benefit of all those who are not used to public transport, it is very easy to get from Basingstoke to Waterloo by train, simple enough to get from Waterloo to Kings Cross by Underground (use Bakerloo and Victoria lines, changing at Oxford Circus), easy to get to Peterborough from Kings Cross, and their ground is much less than a mile from the station.
There are about four trains an hour from Basingstoke to London taking about 50 minutes. Trains leave Kings Cross for Peterborough on the hour, at ten minutes past the hour, and half past the hour, taking 44 minutes to get there. Unless you're looking to spend extended time in either London or Peterborough, I'd recommend leaving Basingstoke station at around 10:25 (although any time up to about 11:20 would probably do).
A return ticket from Basingstoke is £37.60, but you can make the journey cheaper by buying a day return from Basingstoke to London (£12.40), a return Underground ticket to get to Kings Cross (£3), and then a day return from London to Peterborough (£19). In fact if you catch a slow train from London to Peterborough (and back again) you can get a return for the last part of the journey for £15.10 but it does takes 80 minutes, there are only two trains an hour and you have to be certain that you're on the right train.
The journey from Southampton is very similar to that from Basingstoke. The differences are that you should leave Southampton at about 9:50, trains to London take about 80 minutes, and a return for the whole trip is £42.50. To save 10p (!), buy a day return from Southampton to London (£20.40), a return Underground ticket to get to Kings Cross (£3), and then a day return from London to Peterborough (£19). In fact if you catch a slow train from London to Peterborough you can get a return for the last part of the journey for £15.10 but it does takes 80 minutes, there are only two trains an hour and you have to be certain that you're on the right train.
