Wales Under-16s played a friendly at home to the Republic of Ireland at Stebonheath Park in Llanelli. Russell was on the bench at the start of the game, but came on when Wales were losing 1-0. He played at left-back and helped his country to a 1-1 draw.
After the game Russell received his Welsh international cap for the three appearances in the Victory Shield.
The four home nations have taken part in a competition called the Victory Shield at Under-15 level for some years. In recent times, the competition has gained more exposure due to live coverage of games on Sky Sports. Reorganisation of the cut-off dates for age-group international games has caused some confusion (well, to me if no-one else!) and technically the competition is now described as for Under-16s.
Russell Lucas played for Wales Under-16s in all three games of the 2001/02 tournament, coming on as a substitute in the first and starting the other two at left wing-back. The results and league table were as follows:
Thursday, 4th October 2001 - Wales 4 Scotland 4 (Latham Park,
Newtown)
Friday, 2nd November 2001 - England 3 Wales 1 (Adams Park, High
Wycombe)
Friday, 23rd November 2001 - Wales 1 Northern Ireland 0 (Ninian
Park, Cardiff)
