Do you remember the summer of 1999? We were going to buy Bernd Schuster, then Teddy Sheringham, then Mathew Le Tissier, then Ally McCoist, then Alex Mathie, then Samassi Abou, then Tony Cottee, then Paul Kitson, then Darren Jackson, then Marco Negri, then Christian Vieri, then .... (OK, I admit to making up one of those names, but only one). Even though we ended up with Nicky Forster, reality never quite managed to compete with the rumour mill.
Then when Burns was sacked, the new manager was going to be Hoddle or Waddle or Souness or Kinnear or.... The only "big" name we got was Gorman and we were glad to see the back of him.
