The record attendance for Colchester's Layer Road ground (19,072) came in the FA Cup 1st round in 1948 against Reading when Colchester were still a non-league team. Obviously the locals knew that it was a rare chance for them to see such high quality visitors. Unfortunately, that game was abandoned due to thick fog, but Reading won the tie of course, 4-2.
Some Colchester information:
Record defeat - 0-8 against Leyton Orient
Last Reading victory - 3-0 at home in January 2002
Nearest station to ground - Colchester North. However, more trains arrive at and leave from the main Colchester station, and although it's a couple of miles to the ground it is in more or less a straight line so difficult to get lost.
Trivia - the best PA announcement I have ever heard at a football ground was at Layer Road. "This message is for the owner of the maroon Sierra, registration number XYZ 123 P, parked in the Army barracks across the road from the ground. Please move it immediately or it will be blown up". You have been warned.
Should you wish to exchange in banter with any Colchester fans, here is one messageboard you might like to try out.
