Our 1st round opponents in the 2000/01 FA Cup are new to me, and I suspect to most Reading fans. Grays is a town near Tilbury in Essex, and their football team currently play in the Ryman League Premier Division. I say "currently" because at the time of the FA Cup draw they are bottom of the League, having won only one of their twelve League matches. The game at Madejski Stadium really will be their cup final.
Some Grays Athletic information:
Record defeat - 0-12 against Enfield (Athenian League, 1963)
Last Reading victory - the only time we've played them, 4-0 in November 2000
Nearest station to ground - Grays
Trivia - goalkeeper Ray Kemp joined
Reading from Grays Athletic in December 1949 when both of
our two regular keepers got injured. Kemp was an amateur
at the time and only played three games for Reading.
David Crown played for Grays before moving to
Walthamstow, Brentford, Portsmouth and then to Reading.
Crown was Grays' record transfer fee received, as they
and Walthamstow shared the £13,000 fee from Brentford.
Tony Witter also played for both Reading and Grays
Athletic.
