Trips to Northampton have changed in character over the years - it used to be a trip to a three-sided ground, then (after a fire and some safety issues) a trip to a two-sided ground with an appalling view, now it's a trip to a concrete shoebox. Our visit in the 1998/99 season saw one of the better performances of the Burns regime. We kept hold of the ball for about 40 minutes in the first half, with the home side unable to get it off us. The second half was slightly less one-sided but essentially the same. The fact that we only won 1-0 should have been a big lesson about our goal-scoring problems.
The 1999/2000 trip saw them take some revenge as our players apparently failed to turn up.
Some Northampton information:
Record defeat - 0-11 against Southampton (the "...thampton" derby)
Last Reading victory - 2-0 at their place in November 2001
Nearest station to ground - Northampton
Trivia - if you're on the main line from Euston going through Milton Keynes, there's a railway outbuilding with some old Northampton graffiti on it. It says "Northampton Town, Division 4 Champions, 1986/87". Underneath someone has added "Relegated from Division 3, 1987/88"! Not historically accurate, unfortunately.
