Future International Dates

NB This page is not up-to-date.

This page shows the dates when Reading's current international players may be on show for their country (but note that obviously the existence of a fixture shown below does not guarantee that a Reading player will be taking part, particularly for age-group players where squad rotation is commonplace). Any times given are local time unless otherwise stated.

The order of players on this page is:
(a) Full internationals
(b) England age-group internationals
(c) Other age-group internationals starting with the oldest
(d) Ex-Reading players or ex-internationals, where I have not yet moved the information to the biographies in the "Where Are They Now?" section.

For a full list of Reading international players, past and present, go to the "Where Are They Now?" Internationals page.

Shaun definitely did not play in any Bermuda full international matches not listed here but may have played in other exhibition games.

Other information to help me complete this page - He won 18 caps whilst at Rotherham United (25/10/1989 to 17/8/1996). According to a Manchester City site, he had 26 caps at 27/3/2002. According to Reading Evening Post, his last appearance for Bermuda before joining Reading was on 5/3/2000.

  5. Omar Daley (Jamaica)

Omar said that he had played 21 internationals for Jamaica before joining Reading, scoring nine goals. That doesn't quite agree with my list below (although it's possible that the games in the Copa Caribe didn't count as full internationals).

    2004 Olympic Games qualifying:
CONCACAF teams use an Under-23 squad (players born on or after 1/1/1981) for qualifying, but are allowed to use three overage players at the Olympics. There are 25 teams vying for two places at the Games in Athens in 2004.

    1st round:
Sunday, 7th September 2003 - Cuba (away), at Estadio Pedro Marrero, Havana (drew 1-1 - Omar was not in the squad due to an agreement between Reading and Jamaica)
Sunday, 12th October 2003 - Cuba (home), at Tony Spaulding Sports Complex, Kingston (won 1-0 and 2-1 on aggregate - Omar started the game but was substituted after 65 minutes)

    2nd round:
    Sunday, 16th November 2003 - Guatemala (home),
at National Stadium, Kingston (won 2-0 - Omar started but was substituted after 75 minutes when the score was already 2-0)
Wednesday, 19th November 2003 - Guatemala (away), at
Estadio Marquesa de la Ensenada, San Marcos (lost 1-2 but won 3-2 on aggregate - Omar played)

    Final qualifying round:
2nd-12th February 2004 in Mexico - tournament for eight teams. There will be two groups of four (Jamaica are in Group B alongside Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica), with the top two sides in each group progressing to semi-finals. The two finalists both go to the Olympic Games in Athens but they will also play a final match, presumably to assist with seeding at the Olympics.

2006 World Cup (draw on 5/12/2003):

Second round (over two legs) - Jamaica are a seeded team:
    1st leg - 12-13th June 2004
    2nd leg - 19-20th June 2004

Semi-final round (group of four teams playing each other home and away with the top two progressing):
Matches to take place on 18th August, 4/5th September, 8th September, 9/10th October, 13th October 13 and 17th November 2004.

Final round (group of six teams playing each other home and away with the top three teams qualifying for the World Cup Finals and the fourth team going into a play-off against the fifth placed Asian team):
    Matches to take place on 9th February, 26/27th March, 30th March, 4/5th June, 8th June, 17th August 17, 3/4th September, 7th September, 8/9th October and 12th October 2005.

Play-off (over two legs for fourth-placed team):
    1st leg - 12th November 2005
    2nd leg - 16th November 2005

    Friendlies:
Sunday, 7th September 2003 - Australia (technically an away game for Jamaica), at Madejski Stadium, Reading (lost 1-2 - Omar played the whole game).
Sunday, 12th October 2003 - Brazil, at Walkers Stadium, Leicester (lost 0-1 - Omar was not in the squad as he played in an Olympic qualifier instead)
Sunday, 16th November 2003 - El Salvador, at National Stadium, Kingston (won 3-0 - Omar was not in the squad as he played in the Olympic qualifier that immediately preceded the match)
Within 12 months of October 2003 (believe it when you see it!) - England (away)

    Under-23 friendly:
Thursday, 9th October 2003 - Arnett Gardens (lost 2-3 - Omar played the first half; the game was a warm-up match for the Olympic qualifier three days later)

    2003 UEFA-CAF Meridien Cup:

Jamie is in the 18-man England squad, which qualified for this tournament by reaching the final four of last season's UEFA Under-17 Championship.

Thursday, 21st August, 2003 - Poland (away), Warsaw (Jamie is on stand-by for the squad)

    Under-17 training squad?:
England had been looking at Jamie towards the end of the 2001/02 season, and he was called up into an England squad. As the only scheduled Under-17 games were those in the UEFA Under-17 Championship in Denmark and Jamie was not one of the players that went to that tournament, I assume that he was actually only called up for a training squad.

  11. Simieon Howell (England Under-18 / Jamaica Under-23)

For a view of Simieon's England international debut against Scotland in the Under-15 Victory Shield on Friday, 1st December 2000, and details of his other international call-ups, go to an article in the features section of this website.

Simieon was named in the England Under-18 squad for a friendly game away to France in Limoges on 13th November 2002, but had to withdraw due to injury.

    2004 Olympic Games qualifying:
CONCACAF teams use an Under-23 squad (players born on or after 1/1/1981) for qualifying, but are allowed to use three overage players at the Olympics. There are 25 teams vying for two places at the Games in Athens in 2004.

Simieon was named in the 32-man Jamaica training camp for the Olympic qualifiers in July 2003.

    1st round:
Sunday, 7th September 2003 - Cuba (away), at Estadio Pedro Marrero, Havana (drew 1-1 - Simieon played the first half)
Sunday, 12th October 2003 - Cuba (home), at Tony Spaulding Sports Complex, Kingston (won 1-0 and 2-1 on aggregate - Simieon was not in the squad)

    2nd round:
    Sunday, 16th November 2003 (5pm) - Guatemala (home),
    at National Stadium, Kingston
    Wednesday, 19th November 2003 (8pm) - Guatemala (away), at
    Estadio Mario Camposeco, Quetzaltenango

    Final qualifying round:
2nd-12th February 2004 in Mexico - tournament for eight teams. There will be two groups of four (if Jamaica qualify, they will be in Group B alongside Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago / Grenada and Costa Rica / Guyana), with the top two sides in each group progressing to semi-finals. The two finalists both go to the Olympic Games in Athens but they will also play a final match, presumably to assist with seeding at the Olympics.

    Under-19 tournament (in Oberndorf, Germany)
Jamaica sent their Under-20 squad to the tournament. Games were played with two halves of 25 minutes. There were two groups of four teams - Jamaica were in Group A. Simieon was named in the squad but as far as I can tell did not play in any of the games and so presumably did not travel:
    Friday, 15th August 2003 - Freiburg (lost 0-3)
    August 2003 - Vitesse Arnhem (drew 0-0)
    August 2003 - Botafogo (drew 1-1)

    7th / 8th place match: August 2003 - Atletico Madrid (drew 1-1, but lost 5-4 on penalties)

  12. Ahmet Rifat (England Under-17, Scotland Under-17)

Ahmet took part in a 40-man Under-17 training squad in Scotland in August 2002. He has a Scottish mother, allowing him to qualify for that country, and also qualifies for Turkey (through his father) and England through his own birth-place.

Wednesday, 19th February 2003 - Greece, Drama (won 1-0). Ahmet played the second half.

2nd UEFA Under-17 Championship, second qualifying round:
England and Scotland played in a mini-tournament against two other countries. Ahmet could in theory have appeard play for either England or Scotland in this tournament, but was not named in either of the initial squads. Apparently he was on stand-by for the England squad but did not receive a late call-up. England qualified for the final tournament.

2002/03 UEFA Under-17 Championship final tournament:
    7th-17th May 2003 - Portugal
Ahmet was not in the England squad.

    Nordic tournament:
29th July-3rd August 2003 - Norway. Not sure if Ahmet will be eligible for this.

  13. Peter Castle (England Under-16)

31st Montaigu tournament (Peter was a late addition to the squad):
    Wednesday, 16th April 2003 - Russia, Saint-Georges de Montaigu (won 3-0 - Peter played)
Thursday, 17th April 2003 - Gabon, Bouffčre (won 2-0 - Peter started the game but was shown a red card after 15 minutes)
    Saturday, 19th April 2003 - France, Montaigu (lost 1-3)

    Gabon 2 0 0 2 0 10 -10 0

Monday, 21st April 2003 (1.30pm) - third-place match at Montaigu against Portugal, Republic of Ireland or Japan

  14. Scott Murray (Scotland future)

Scott played one game for the Scotland future side (essentially a "B" team) before joining Reading but has missed games since then, sometimes simply because his club side had a fixture on that date. He was however recalled to the squad in December 2003. All games played by the future side are really friendlies but they have been combined into a tournament called the Future Cup.

    Future Cup:
Tuesday, 17th December 2002 - Germany, at Stadion am Bruchweg, Mainz (drew 3-3 - Scott came on as a substitute after 41 minutes when Scotland were losing 1-0)
Tuesday, 25th February 2003 - Turkey, at Ataturk Stadium, Antalya (drew 1-1 - Scott was in the initial squad but withdrew to play in a club game instead)
Tuesday, 21st October 2003 - Germany, at Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen (lost 0-1 - Scott was not in the squad, probably because Reading were playing the same night)
Wednesday, 10th December 2003 - Turkey, at Tannadice Park, Dundee (drew 1-1 - Scott played the whole game and received a yellow card)

    Final table:
      P W D L F A GD Pts
    Turkey 4 1 3 0 4 3 +1 6

  15. Joe Gamble (Republic of Ireland Under-21)

2004 European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 10 (for players born on or after 1/1/1981):
Friday, 28th March 2003 - Georgia (away) (drew 1-1) - Joe unavailable due to injury
Friday, 1st April 2003 - Albania (away) (lost 0-1) - Joe unavailable due to injury
Friday, 6th June 2003 - Albania (home), Flancare Park, Longford (won 2-1 on the night but game later awarded 3-0 to Albania) - Joe unavailable due to injury
Tuesday, 10th June 2003 - Georgia (home), Buckley Park, Kilkenny (drew 1-1) - Joe unavailable due to injury
Friday, 5th September 2003 - Russia (home) (won 2-0) - Joe not in the squad
Friday, 10th October 2003 - Switzerland (away) (won 2-0) - Joe not in the squad

    Final Group 10 table:
      P W D L F A GD Pts
    Switzerland 8 6 1 1 12 6 +6 19
    Russia 8 5 0 3 14 8 +6 15

    Republic of Ireland 8 2 2 4 8 11 -3 8
    Georgia 8 1 2 5 7 16 -9 5

UEFA overturned the Republic of Ireland v Albania result because the home side had cheated by fielding a player who should have been suspended. The match is therefore recorded in the table as a 3-0 win to Albania.

    Under-21 friendlies:
Tuesday, 26th March 2002 - Denmark, Turner's Cross, Curragh Road, Cork (won 3-2 - Joe was a substitute and scored the winning goal)

Tuesday, 20th August 2002 (6.30pm local time) - Finland, Finnair Stadium, Helsinki (won 1-0 - Joe was in the 17-man squad)

    30th Toulon International Tournament (Under-20):

    South Africa 4 1 1 2 3 9 -6 4
    Republic of Ireland 4 0 1 3 3 8 -5 1

The group winners played in the final against the winners of group A whilst the two runners-up met in a third-place match, both games on Friday, 17th May at the Stade Mayol in Toulon.

    Under-21 training camp:
On 16th January, 2002 Joe was included in a Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad for a training camp to take place between Sunday 27th and and Wednesday 30th January. The camp included a friendly game against an Aston Villa side at Bisham Abbey on the Wednesday, and Gamble scored the second goal in a 3-2 win.

Thursday, 25th July - play-off game against Scotland at Rugby Avenue Stadium, Coleraine (lost 1-4) - Chris started this game

As far as I know, Chris made his first international appearance on 13/2/2002 (certainly his first at Under-17 level), although as he joined Reading at the start of the 2001/02 season I may have missed some.

Friendly (Chris came on as a substitute):
Wednesday, 13th February 2002 - Germany, Stebonheath Park, Llanelli (lost 0-1)

  17. Ryan Crockford (Wales Under-17)

In 2002/03 Ryan was still young enough to play for an Under-16 side but instead was named for training squads and friendly games at Under-17 level.

    Training camp:

  25. Ryan Maxwell (Northern Ireland Under-17)

Ryan left Reading in the summer of 2002. He was in the Northern Ireland squad for the Elite Competition of the 2002 Milk Cup.

I believe that Ryan did not make any international appearances whilst at Reading, but he was called into the Northern Ireland Under-17 training squad during the 2000/01 season.
