Match report:

From the Reading Mercury, 23/11/1872 edition:

"Football Match - On Wednesday last a football match was played at Windsor between the Reading and Windsor Home Park Clubs, and resulted in a victory for the Home team by 2 goals (Chamberlain and Turner) to Reading 1 goal (Haygarth). The return match will be played at Reading on January 29th."

Match notes:

The first three games in Reading's history ended as 0-0 draws. This was the fourth game, so Edward Brownlow Haygarth's goal was therefore the first ever scored by a Reading player. Furthermore, the reference to him as goalscorer is currently the oldest known mention of any individual Reading player or official. As he was later to gain one full England international cap, he is certainly a worthy holder of that title.

This was the first known away game for Reading Football Club and the first defeat, perhaps helping to prepare supporters for those many years when we were practically unbeatable at home but very poor on our travels.

The peculiar grammar of the part of the report describing the score and scorers is precisely as it appears in the Reading Mercury.
