Match notes:

Compared to the Leicester City game, John Salako replaced Anthony Rougier, whilst Ricky Newman came in for Sammy Igoe with Andy Hughes moving to a wide right position. John Mackie and Darius Henderson were on the bench with Rougier, Igoe and Martin Butler dropped from the 16.

Steve Sidwell's goals were his first for the club, in only his second appearance.

Marcus Hahnemann saved a second-half penalty when the score was 3-1 to Reading. Nicky Forster had a second-half penalty saved but Steve Sidwell scored from the rebound for our fourth goal.

Darius Henderson's goal was his first this season.

The win gave Reading our first double of the season, having beaten Burnley 3-0 at home on 27/8/2002.

This game was the first time Reading had scored four goals since the 4-1 home win over Tranmere Rovers on 20/11/2001 and the first time we had scored five since the 5-1 home win over Swansea City on 23/9/2000. The last time Reading scored five goals away from home was in the 6-4 win at Exeter City on 9/10/1993.
