On 3/10/1878, before the season started, was held the earliest Annual General Meeting that I have yet found a record of. This was at the Queen's Hotel. The balance sheet showed a deficit of £3 2s 10d, so subscriptions were raised from 5s to 7s 6d. It was also agreed to charge admission for games for the first time, at a rate of 3d per match or 2s for the season. The charge was possible because this was the first season that Reading played home games at Reading Cricket Ground. Its location today is part of Kings Meadow, behind the Booker Cash and Carry.
The overall record for Reading for
the season was:
P23 W17 D1 L5 F57 A9
Six postponements

At the end of the season, the club held its second Annual Dinner, on 21/5/1879. At this dinner, club president James Simonds said that the club had been formed ten years ago, which I guess was based on a quick calculation after a few drinks! Honorary secretary J W Martin added that there were now ten clubs in the Berks & Bucks Football Association, and there was a proposal to include Oxfordshire. Presumably this never happened.
