Report from The Scribe:
This game was played at Palmer Park in Reading, because the pitch at Leyton Orient was waterlogged. The pitch at Palmer Park is very narrow, and for this game was not in that good a condition. This made it difficult for either side to control the ball, so that the game was fairly scrappy.
Orient had one good spell of pressure in the first half, where they hit the post, then Howie had to make a good save and finally a player headed over the bar when it would have been easier to score. Apart from those incidents, which all occurred within two or three minutes, they did not threaten Reading all game.
After about half-an-hour, Darius Henderson played a through-ball for Tony Rougier who went on to score the opening goal. In fact Henderson had a very good first half, but faded later in the match.
About ten minutes from the end of the game, Reading sealed the win with their second goal. Good interplay down the left wing between Rougier and Stuart Gray put Gray through on goal. Although with an acute angle, he was able to shoot across the goalkeeper and get the ball into the net near the far post.
My man-of-the-match would be Neil Smith, but all the defence also played well. Guilliaume Norbert made his debut, playing on the right wing. He didn't do that much, but the width of the pitch does make it awkward for any wide player to get into the game.
Again, it was good to see the entire Reading FC management team at this game, although this week Kevin Dillon was of course back in charge.
