Match report:

By a guest reporter:

In scorching temperatures the game was contested vigorously by both sides, Kingstonian's Colin Luckett forcing a good diving save from Simon Cox. Both sides had half chances, until ten minutes from the break Scott Williams scored a fine individual goal dribbling past three tackles before firing a shot past Lance Key in the home goal. Kingstonian had a chance on the stroke of half time but Cox dived to punch the ball off the head of Dave Clarke who was waiting to head home.

Kingstonian changed their whole side for the second half which meant Reading in the heat would have their work cut out to compete. Kingstonian equalised, and as the half progressed Reading were pegged back in their half for long periods but held firm, Cox once again making a good save to keep Reading level. Then five minutes from time Kingstonian were awarded a hotly disputed free-kick and a ball played along the edge of the area was fired home past the unsighted Cox. Reading continued to argue with the referee, resulting in John Mackie being forcibly substituted at the referee's command.

This was a hard workout for Reading, effectively playing against two fresh sides, but the form of Adam Campion and a good display from Cox (who only arrived back in England on Friday night after two games in two days for the Republic of Ireland Under-17 side) would have given reserve team manager Kevin Dillon some cheer.
