Stylish forward who played for Reading's reserves on trial in a 2-1 win over Cardiff City on 23/1/2002, and after one more reserve trial game signed a contract on 7/2/2002. He was previously at Walton & Hersham, having come through their youth and reserve teams to make his first team debut there at the end of the 2000/01 season. His transfer fee was £25,000 down, a further £20,000 after four League games, plus a 15% sell-on fee, and a promise of visit by Reading to Walton & Hersham for a friendly match in 2002 (which actually took place in August 2003!).
After several reserve appearances, Bas was a non-playing substitute in the League draw away to Tranmere Rovers on 7/4/2002 and then scored his first goal for Reading in the reserve game away to Bristol Rovers on 17/4/2002. He made his Football League debut in the promotion-winning 1-1 draw away to Brentford on the last day of the 2001/02 season, coming on as a substitute in second-half injury-time. After that match, Bas showed us that he can moonwalk with the very best.
In the pre-season tour of Germany in 2002, Bas picked up a serious injury and had to miss the whole of the 2002/03 season. He was back for pre-season in 2003/04, playing in first team friendlies.
