Graeme Murty started his professional career at York City, apparently normally playing as a right winger. At York he took part and scored in a famous League cup victory over Everton, before signing for Reading for £700,000 in the summer of 1998.
He is that rarity, a player signed for Reading by Tommy Burns who turned out to be good enough to play for the club, although probably in a completely different position from that intended by Burns. Burns himself was not to see the outcome as a number of injuries limited Graeme to nine games before he was sacked.
Under Alan Pardew, he has developed into an accomplished full-back and has nearly always been available for selection. His performances in the Division 2 promotion season earnt him the Player of the Year trophy for 2001/02.
In August 2002, I asked Graeme at a STAR fans forum if the story I had heard about him being Scottish was true. He answered that his father was Scottish and that therefore he could play for Scotland.
In May 2003, Scotland manager Berti Vogts was at a Reading game to watch another player, and was surprised to be told that both Graeme Murty and Andy Hughes were eligible for Scotland. This tells you everything you need to know about the state of administration in Scottish football, especially considering that the assistant manager is the same Tommy Burns who signed Graeme for Reading.
In December 2003, Graeme appeared for the Scotland Future side and then the following February made his debut for the first team.
