Hamed Kavianpour

Born 1/12/1978 in Bandar Anzali, Iran

In late February 2002, Hamed Kavianpour came to England and spent a few days on trial with Reading. We decided not to take him on. Apparently, he spoke no English and his interpreter was not much better, although that was not the reason for our lack of interest.

His first clubs in Iran were Saipa Tehran and Moghavamat Mashhad. He then moved to Persepolis (who are also commonly known as Pirouzi). In late 2000 he had a trial with Ipwich Town, then one with Bolton Wanderers and in August 2001 spent a week at Newcastle United. It was claimed that one English club had wanted to sign him but had been put off by the price asked by Persepolis.

He had to leave an Iran national team training camp to have his trial with Reading, and over the summer of 2002, he was linked with Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough. Rumour also had it that Atletico Madrid and SV Hamburg were interested. There was a point where he might have moved to Germany to play for Arminia Bielefeld in order to wipe out a debt that Persepolis had not paid, but instead in July 2002 he signed a one-year contract with Al Wasl in the United Arab Emirates.

Kavianpour is a tough-tackling midfielder who has also played up front. He has represented Iran on many occasions (41 caps as at May 2002) and was part of the team that just failed to reach the 2002 World Cup Finals.

In July 2002, Kavianpour was questioned over the murder of the agent who arranged his transfer to the UAE, after he had visited the agent's house in Tehran on the date of his death.

From Iranmania, 23/4/2002:

Persepolis has decided to straighten its debt with the German Arminia Bielefeld club. The 500,000-Mark debt was the result of the transfer of Karim Bagheri to the Bielefeld club, the payment of which has been postponed until now. Persepolis's PEO representative, Dr. Biglari, traveled to Germany recently to sort out the matter with the claimants. After discussions it was decided to allow Persepolis a one-month to pay their debt. The Bielefeld officials have agreed to either be paid in cash or have a top player of the club transferred to their club. Persepolis apparently has the inclination to accept the second choice. The suggestion of handing over Hamed Kavianpour, the top midfield player of Persepolis, may not be welcomed by the club. Kavianpour's transfer proposals have not been met with enthusiasm by Persepolis officials so far.

From Iranmania, 26/4/2002:

An unnamed English club apparently intended to get Hamed Kavianpour, the Iranian player of Persepolis, transferred to their club for the sum of 300,000 pounds. But after the broken promises and delays by Kavianpour and Persepolis, the club seems to have lost interest in the deal and has stopped its requests. Informed sources from the UK have said that Middlesborough has now shown interest in the young player. It seems that they are going to have serious talks with Persepolis and may finalize the deal for his transfer in the near future.

From IRNA, 17/6/2002

National midfielder of Pirouzi, Hamed Kavianpour, signed a contract with Al Wasl of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to informed sources, Kavianpour joined the Emirati team for 500 thousand d ollars. The Iranian footballer's contract with Al Wasl is extendable.

From Iranmania, 11/7/2002:

The news of Hamed Kavianpour, the Persepolis and national Team player, being questioned for the murder of an Arab football agent (Seyed Rahim) in Iran three weeks ago, which was published in an Iranian newspaper yesterday, 10th July, has shocked many people in Iran. Hamed was apparently questioned as a suspect in the case when a film of him playing football was found in the victim's house. It seems that Hamed had visited the man on the day of the murder to give him the mentioned films but had no idea that he was killed later. Kavianpour has been asked to be available for further questioning.

Kavianpour himself commented in this regard, "Let them (the newspapers) write that Hamed has gone to prison. At the moment everyone is writing whatever they want without supervision. The truth is that I gave the deceased video of my games and my performance so he could arrange my transfer to an Arab club. I was then summoned to court three weeks ago to explain about the film and I signed my statement there too."

"Since yesterday some people have contacted me and one said that he would visit me in prison. There are various opinions. I am happy I am not the murder. I do not know why we (Iranians) can be influenced so easily. In the blink of an eye and with one rumor Kavianpour becomes a murder. This is what they say about me today, let's see what they'll label me in the future."
