Mark Atkins
Trialist with Reading in October 1999 along with Uwe Wolf from Germany. Played in a 2-1 friendly win at Kingstonian on 26/10/1999. He then went on loan to York City, before finally joining Doncaster Rovers. He was "promoted" to the post of player/joint caretaker manager at Doncaster on 20/4/2000 until the end of the season. He then joined Hull City, helping them into the play-offs before joining Shrewsbury Town as a player on 31st May 2001.
The following is from www.soccer-files.com:
Mark Atkins made his league debut for Scunthorpe United whilst still a schoolboy and appeared in over 60 senior matches for the club (as well as playing for England schools) before moving to Blackburn for £45,000. Although he spent much of his early career at Ewood Park at full-back, Mark continually demonstrated an eye for goal.
Under the managership of Kenny Dalglish, he developed into a battling midfield player whose boundless energy and appetite for work made him the ideal partner for the more sophisticated skills of those around him. Whilst the crowd at Blackburn didn't always appreciate his importance to the team his colleagues never undervalued his role.
When injury forced David Batty to miss the majority of the 1994-95 season it was Mark who filled the void and formed an impressive central midfield partnership with Tim Sherwood. Many felt it something of an injustice when Mark was forced to sit out the final three games of the season following the return of Batty. However, there were no complaints from Atkins who once again proved himself a loyal servant to the club.
With Batty and Sherwood holding down the midfield positions at Blackburn, Mark accepted a £1 million move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1995. During four seasons at Molinuex, he once again proved his versatility by operating in several positions but was unfortunately unable to help Wolves bridge the gap to the Premiership.
On being released from Molinuex in the summer of 1999, Mark had short spells with York City and Reading before dropping into non-league football.
