PRIZE PICKLE GOES FOR THE BURN

By Richard Wright - Friday, January 19, 2007

THE winner of the sixth annual Pickle Wars warmed parts ordinary onions cannot reach.
Richard Green stepped forward with some blistering pickled onions believed to be the hottest yet produced in the competition.
Richard, a trustee of the Kerry Green Trust, a charity set up in memory of Kerry Green who died of cancer in 2000, was supporting a charity event of a different kind.
His jar, which won top prize, was spiced up with concentrated chilli extract from what are officially recognised as the hottest chillies in the world, Dorset Naga.
Contest organiser Terry Ashdown, who was one of the judges to try onions from all 36 jars in the competition, said: “The Dorset Naga claimed the new world record with 700,000 units of the heat that chillies are measured in. We were delighted to be given some for the contest but the extract Richard used from them had one million of those heat units.”
After he scooped the top prize and second place, too, with a slightly less fiery jar, Richard sold his red hot-specials, dyed red for danger, at £1 a time and if people could get them down, they were presented with a certificate to mark the achievement.
Sue Brockwell, licensee of the Woodvale Hotel at Gurnard, which was again venue to Sunday’s competition, produced a jar that was joint runner-up.
Terry said: “It looks like we will top £5,000 raised for the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, which is tremendous when you consider last year the total was £3,400 and the year before that £2,000. Each year the total has exceeded our expectations.”
