The award is richly deserved. 6/3/2011 Local volunteer RNLI presenter Edward “Ted” Watson was both surprised and pleased to be the recipient of Rhyl lifeboat crew’s “David Benjamin Jones” shield for outstanding service to the Rhyl station, at the crew’s annual dinner, held at Rhuddlan Golf Club on 5th March 2011.The award was designed for the person who, in the crew’s opinion, made the most significant progress in highlighting the work done by the RNLI, and Rhyl crew in particular, over the last year. The award was designed in memory of David Jones, who sadly died aged 20 when a long RNLI career as a crew member at Rhyl was tragically cut short. Ted was presented with the shield and a small personal copy by Peter Robinson, the previous coxswain at Rhyl. Ted carries out numerous tasks to further the RNLI’s message, at various meetings and events throughout North Wales and the Marches. He is responsible for transporting a publicity inshore lifeboat to all events and is a familiar face all over the North Wales area, and as part of this work, manages to raise many thousands of pounds for the charity. PIC 1/2/2011 Many thanks to those who took the trouble to vote for the station in the NatWest bank's "Community Award scheme". As a result of this, the station branch has been awarded a £1000 award. 2010 14/10/2010 Congratulations to Tina Elliott, Tara Elliott, Dean Priestley and Bob Baines, for successfully completing their probationary period and becoming full crew members. 24/09/2010 Our Coxswain, Peter Robinson, retired this month on reaching the statutory maximum age for sea-going duties. Martin jones, mechanic, is now Coxswain/Mechanic. Peter retires after over 15 years at the helm. At a surprise dinner on 24th September for Peter, he was presented with a service certificate by Training Divisional Inspector Andy Hurley, together with a new tabard and helmet for Peter to use for his role on the shore crew. The pictures show Peter passing over the running of the boat to Martin Jones, and Peter receiving his certificate from Andy Hurley. Peter will remain on the crew as Deputy Coxswain until he reaches retirement due to age in September 2010. Crew list will be amended after the event, so Peter will be Deputy Coxswain, along with Paul Archer-jones and Paul Frost. Peter had a surprise party after the exercise, with friends attending from Rhyl Diving Club; Rhyl Fishermen's' association; Rhyl Yacht Club, and many more. Pics to follow. 20/2/2010 The crew held their annual dinner and awards presentations at the Rhyl Golf Club. There were 4 awards presented. Martin Jones, Darrel Graham and Callum Robinson were sent their letters recently. See above. 2009 5/12/2009 Crews from Rhyl, Llandudno and Flint took part in a medical exercise in Rhyl harbour, using both of Rhyl's boats, and also involving 2 shore-based scenarios. The exercise was overseen by RNLI Inspectors and First aid trainers from Poole HQ. The exercise went very well and took 40 minutes to complete. A debrief was held in the Yacht Club. They used the station LandRover LR102 to travel in convoy to Cumbria, with other members of the North Wales team. Crew members Martin Jones, Darrel Graham and Callum Robinson, under the command of Deputy District Inspector Matt Croft, arrived in the area at 2200 and immediately were set to work in rescuing residents using RNLI rescue boats and D class ILBs and Arancias in conjunction with the other rescue services. Link here - http://www.rnli.org.uk/who_we_are/press_centre/news_releases/news_release_detail?articleid=503714 The teams returned to North Wales at 1300 on Saturday 21st November, assisting up to 200 people from their dwellings. Their base was Carlisle castle. PIC 20/9/2009 Trials commenced on a "SOFTRAC" tracked vehicle to tow the ILB on the beach. Trials will take place approximately until the end of September. (See tractors page for pictures) The vehicle was returned to depot early November 2009 with suggestions from crew. The vehicle proved to be slow at getting to the water's edge at low water compared with our original County tractor. It looks like we will have one anyway. 30/8/2009 There were 2 presentations at our open day on 30th August
14/8/2009 Rhyl Fundraisers have announced that this year's Flag day collected £3,308.90. Congratulations to you all ! 2008 16/5/2008 Mrs. Jean Frost, station Vice-President received her MBE from HRH Prince Charles at an investiture at Buckingham Palace today. PICTURE shows Mrs. Frost with her Grand-daughter Natasha, Sister Dorothy, and Son Paul, on the steps of the Palace after receiving her award. 3/1/ 2008 Thieves broke into the lifeboat station at Rhyl sometime over the New Year evening. They managed to get into the mechanic’s room and appear to have tried to get into the souvenir shop, but failed to break the reinforced glass. It appears that they also went on to the lifeboat but investigations revealed that nothing was taken. Tools in the mechanics room were gathered together, but it seems that the thieves must have been disturbed and fled empty-handed. Luckily none of the essential equipment; the boats and launching vehicles were damaged, and the lifeboat volunteers were able to make the boat and boathouse safe to continue the life-saving efforts of Rhyl lifeboat crew and fund-raisers. It was late realised that the DVD re-writer used to make the films for the crew was taken. It must be emphasised that no money or valuables are stored in the shop overnight, so the thieves would not have gained much for their efforts. Closed-circuit television footage was examined by the police, and identified the persons involved. They were successfully convicted and sentenced to prison. |
