Aeromodelling
Just
recently, I built my first model aeroplane which could be considered
good enough to enter into a competition. Actually I built
two...
They are 8"
catapult launch free flight gliders from this
plan.
The only
major deviations from the plan are that I moved the tail assembly
forward slightly so that the end of the boom could be used as a grip
and I fashioned a catapult hook from two small pieces of sanded down
cocktail stick. Also, the boom is 1/8th inch square balsa
reinforced with carbon tow superglued to both sides. The
reason I had to build two is that having asked my youngest son to help
decorate the first, he's now claimed it as his!
Having flown the one in the foreground in the photo with my good buddy
Stephen Brewer (The designer.) I think it's safe to say that given a
good launch and a bit of 'good air', it should be up for comfortably
over a minute aloft! Make sure you bring binoculars if you
make and fly one of these!!!
Taking a few design cues from the BabyB, here's
a plan
for a reasonably simple 24" discus launch glider. With a bit of
luck, a clip or two of the finished article doing the business might
end up on YouTube...
