Male Voice Choirs: General notes

It has been said that a male voice choir is the best club that a man can belong to.

The reason is because there is something in the soul of mankind that delights in singing in harmony and counterpoint. For many men (and also women) this reaches its most stirring and spine-tingling climax with the sound of a male voice choir.

For the ordinary male, the pleasure of singing is limited to inexpert renderings now and then, at Christmas, at church, and at the sports club or pub, in concert with others who can't sing either. Members of a male voice choir get this pleasure all the time. What is more, members of a choir get trained to sing properly, and learn a wide repertoire of songs.

Being a member of a male voice choir, such as Hart, also offers much more. It offers the opportunity to give great pleasure to others; to see joy and happiness spread over a sea of faces; to receive rapt applause; occasionally to get calls for encores, and even more occasionally to be given a standing ovation.

It offers the nerve-jangling thrill of performing against other choirs in competition, and occasionally the pride of carrying home the trophy.

It also gives the opportunity to get to know all the theatres, churches and halls near and far, to travel and visit interesting places, to sing in majestic settings such as ancient cathedrals, even to sing on radio and TV, and to meet famous people.

All the time, and wherever the choir goes, members are among a brotherhood of friends. The choir is also part of the wider brotherhood of other male voice choirs. Being a member of the choir also offers the opportunity for further self development, to progress to solo singing, to try a hand at compering, and in contributing in the various jobs and skills that the choir requires in order to operate effectively.
