2009 was the seventh year of HMVC's ‘Young Singer’ competition. Although numbers were down on last year the quality was, as usual, extremely high.
The competition is divided into 3 classes and the winner of each section receives a financial award:
· Junior Section: 11-13 years (£100)
· Intermediate Section :14-16 years (£200)
· Senior section: 17-21 (£300)
Auditions were held at the Cross Barn in Odiham on Saturday 7th February at the end of a very snow-laden week. Indeed there were concerns that this might disrupt proceedings, but in the event, everyone turned up despite the difficult conditions – a testament to the attraction of the competition?
As usual, there was a good turn out from choir members and wives/partners to provide an ‘audience’ for the young singers – a feature which is greatly appreciated by the performers.
The auditions ran from 2.00pm – 6.50pm, a long day for all concerned, particularly the adjudicators, Valerie Hoppe, Ralph Earwicker and Alan Whiting.
The competition was extremely keen and this was particularly evident in the Intermediate section. It took some considerable discussion before the winner of this section was agreed.
The winners were as follows:
· Junior: Beth Mabin (13yrs). Her songs were:
- 'It was a lover and his lass'
- 'I once loved a boy' (unaccompanied)
- 'Somewhere over the Rainbow'
· Intermediate: Max Fane (16yrs). He sang:
- 'Loveliest of trees'
- 'Nice work if you can get it'
- 'Ombra Mai Fu'
· Senior: Gareth Edmunds (20yrs). He sang:
- 'Where’er you walk'
- 'At the railway station'
- 'Weep no More'

All participants receive a full adjudication from Valerie and a certificate.
The winners will be performing at the Gala Concert on Saturday 9th May at the Princes Hall, Aldershot.
