Family Stories
Life in Australia:
GEORGE at the Age of 22 Years took up Farming and moved to Victoria and at the Age of
32 Years he Married CATHERINE GELLIE on the 25 April, 1862 at the Presbyterian Church at
Carlsruhe, Victoria. GEORGE purchased Land in Mitchellstown, Victoria and was Granted
31.16 ha on the 25 February, 1875 at Tabilk adjacent to CATHERINE'S Father JOHN GELLIE.
GEORGE owned 3 Cottages, Tabilk Cottage at Station Avenue, Moreland, Victoria and Arlim
& Melton Cottages situated at Garden Grove, Malvern, Victoria. GEORGE and CATHERINE
had 12 Children, 8 Daughters and 4 Sons, unfortunately however, only one Son survived,
ROBERT HARVEY LARKMAN who left Victoria in the early 1900s to live in Western Australia
where he Married FANNY MARIA SCRIVENER, they had 8 Children, 5 Sons and 3 Daughters, so
the only surviving LARKMANS in Australia are all still living in the Western Australian
Region. Five of GEORGE and CATHERINE'S Children Died when very young, the other seven
Children Married and had large Families. CATHERINE Died 13 February, 1889 of Cerrhosis of
the Liver and Cerebral Effusion at the Age of 51 years, she Died in the Mooroopna Hospital
and was Buried in the Avenel Cemetery, Victoria. GEORGE continued his Farming in
Mitchellstown and surrounding areas, he Married ALICE WILSON 21 July, 1892 at the
Residence of ALICE in Mitchellstown, there were no children to this Marriage. GEORGE Died
12 March, 1902 of Asthma and Mitral Gangrene at Baillieston, Victoria and he is Buried 14
March, 1902 at the Avenel Cemetery with his Wife CATHERINE. GEORGE made a Will which
States that all his Personal and Real Estate be equally shared amongst his Seven Children,
ISABELLA having been only seven years old at the time of the Will being signed by GEORGE,
he advised her share to be held until she reached the age of 18 Years, so as GEORGE did
not Die until 1902 ISABELLA was 18 years at the time of his Death so was entitled to her
share at that time. There was no mention of his second Wife ALICE in the Will. GEORGE
apparently lent A.W. BARR of Burnley the Sum of 200,00 Pounds in turn was holding a Bill
of Sale over Mr. Barrs' Furniture as Security and was demanding it to be collected within
3 months of his Death so it could be equally divided amongst his Family. Also he had lent
one Horse tip dray and Harness, One Express Wagon and Harness, One Two Horse Power Horse
works for Chaff Cutting to a John Nagle, all to be returned and sold so monies to be
divided for his Family.
