Thomas and Sarah Copelin

Thomas Copelin, d: February 1922, married Sarah, b: 1865, d: 1915, and had one child: Sarah, b: August 24, 1891, d: February 3, 1969 . Thomas and Sarah saved and bought land in the Laytonsville, Maryland area. He owned a farm on Dorsey Road in Laytonsville, and Cioshen School Road in Goshen. He was the first black to own a home on the main street in Laytonsville. After two days the whites claimed it back again. Thomas owned the old parsonage, and later gave this house to Brooke Grove Church (as the deed read) for the sum of $1.00 to make it legal. Thomas drove his daughter, Sarah, in his horse and buggy to Brooke Grove everyday for her education.
Sarah grew up in Washington Grove, Maryland, one mile from Gaithersburg, Maryland. With her parents, they were servants for John Larkman.
Sarah was called Bethel by her friends. She attended Storer College in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, traveling by train whenever she returned home. Sarah's hobbies were sewing and reading. She was a member of Brooke Grove Church were she taught Sunday School , was a member of the Homemakers Club, and the Ladies Aid, later called the Women's Society. She was a good homemaker, planner, and organizer. She would always hum hymns. She was a quiet spoken person who loved her children.
Sarah and Darius raised their family on a farm on Goshen School Road. They attended church and traveled together.
