BRIDGE FOR ALL SPRING TOURNAMENT

The 2nd Annual O.B.A. Bridge for All Spring Tournament was held at Wallingford Bridge Club on Sunday 21 April. Entry was restricted to players who have completed at least one of Units 1-4 of the Bridge for All program in the last 3 years.

The tournament was divided into two sections ‘Year 1’ was restricted to players who are very recent starters and have not yet reached Unit 3, the remainder played in Year 2 all having already completed Unit 3 and most of them Unit 4.

This year there was an added incentive for those playing in the Year 2 section in that Oxford Times Newspapers generously supported the tournament by donating an excellent trophy for the section winners.

The winners of both sections each received a small vase donated by the EBU to keep as a momento.

Mr Derek Holmes of the Oxford Times Newspapers presented The Oxford Times Bridge for All Trophy and prizes to the first 3 pairs in both sections.

Other guests who came along to the tournament were Mike Fletcher, Chairman of the O.B.A., who welcomed all the players and Mr John Pain, Head of Bridge for All at EBU headquarters.

The tournament was a great success both as a competition and as a social event that allowed players from different parts of the county to meet up with others of similar bridge playing ability.

A great advantage of having a Nationwide teaching program is that all the players are learning the same system and at about the same pace as a result it was possible to arrange for individuals who had never met before to play together as a pair.

The tournament was organised and directed by Mike Brown ably supported by Ina Merriman, Alison Nicolson, Arthur Tulip, Andy Collins, Peter Baxter and Malcolm and Rose Simpson.
