City & Guilds Phase II Year 3 Organic
Husbandry and Holistic Studies
The Course: The course runs one year from
September to July. A wide range of topics and
lectures are supported with handouts and practical
experience. Time will be spent in the garden and
horticultural unit. Runs on Tuesdays at the main
College (Enfield), starting September 26, 2000, and
on Mondays at Gunnersbury Park, starting September
25, 2000.
Course Content: The course is intended to
stimulate people working as professional gardeners
or growers, to extend their knowledge of organics,
permaculture and holistic studies.

- permaculture principles and practices
- design principles
- medicinal/herbal plants
- horticultural practices
Visits to organic practises are arranged during
the year. Some of the visits relate to on-going
projects.
Assessment: Assessment is by assignments,
practical tests and an end of year examination.
Students attending the course need to allow 2 hours
per week for course work (to be completed at home).
Qualification Gained: Success on this
course leads to the City & Guilds Amenity
Horticultue (0220) Phase II Year 3 Certificate in
Organic Husbandry & Holistic Studies. With some
additional work (on a home based project) this unit
could lead to the Certificate in Permaculture
Design.
Entry Requirement: You are welcome to
visit the College to discuss and identify with one
of the course tutors a study programme which will
help towards your intended career. All students are
assessed on an individual basis but a sound
understanding of horticultural practices and a good
plant knowledge are essential.
The normal entry requirements are:
- City & Guilds Amenity Horticulture or
- City & Guilds Gardening Certificate
0061-11/12 or
- NVQ Level I Amenity Horticulture or
- RHS General Certificate in Horticulture or
- Other relevant qualifications of equivalent
standard
- Several years experience in the
horticultural industry will also be considered.
Course Dates and Terms: The course runs
for 36 weeks from September 1999 with normal
college holidays at Christmas and Easter. The end
of the course examination is in the middle of June.
Please note, there are half term breaks on this
course. The day runs from 9.00am to 4.30pm with the
last half hour being available for tutorials.
Fees: £185.00 course fee, plus
£50.00 examination fee.
Course Costs: Apart from the course and
examination fees, students will need to buy safety
boots, secateurs and propagating knife.
Venues: This course takes place at four
different venues:
- Capel Manor's main site in Bullsmore Lane,
Enfield.
- Gunnersbury Park
The 30 acre estate at Capel is laid out to
include areas to develop permaculture, and also
affords the student the use of an organically
practising horticultural unit.
