Rewriting the Plot: Photographs and Images

Oyama So-no-Sato Shimin Noen in Tannan Town, Hyogo Prefecture (No website)

Another rural site but in a less remote area, just one hour from metropolitan Kobe, and featuring sheds (on the British model) rather than chalets, which are not suitable for overnight stay. The sheds were constructed by the local authority, along with the clubhouse, which is also used by local villagers for meetings.

Profile (by Ren Azuma): A site of 2 hectares operated by the local authority on a 20 year lease and located on common land owned by the farmers in the village. Plots are 150 square meters each, and there are 23 plots with sheds and 103 without. Plots are let on an annual basis renewable for up to five years, at a fee of 140,000 to 160,000 yen (or around 900 punds) per annum (plots with shed) and 20,000 to 26,000 yen (around £130) per anum (plots without sheds). The total cost of construction (170 million yen, or one million pounds)) was 40% subsidised by central government (mainly through Ministry of Agriculture programmes), 53% paid for by the local authority's general budget, and 7% financed by municipal bonds. As at Bozuyama and Kiyosato, the land is zoned for agricultural use.
