Rewriting the Plot: Photographs and Images

Yamada Hobby Farm in Kobe City (No website)

Allotments in the suburbs of Kobe City noted for the high level of recycling employed. Located on former terraced rice paddy land subsequently converted to dry fields, on a hillside near a residential development. The site is also characterised by excellent social and working relationships between the landowners and gardeners and amongst the gardeners, and is featured within the text of Wiltshire and Azuma (2000).

Profile (by Ren Azuma): A site of 4 hectares in operation since 1976 operated by a land owners' association on behalf of the farmers who own the land. There are between 160 and 180 plots let on an annual but indefinitely renewable basis. Most gardeners renew their contracts, so the availability of plots to new entrants is limited to whatever vacancies arise. The usage fee is 10,000 yen (60 pounds) per annum. Most plots have sheds built by the gardeners themselves from scrap materials: gardeners are given instruction on construction methods and sources of scrap timber (mostly from houses undergoing demolition) by farmers and specialist instructors on site. No clubhouse. The land is zoned for agricultural use.
