About the Project ...

TThe North West Kent Countryside Project is now in its sixteenth year of existence having been set up in 1984 as the first countryside management project in Kent. It operates within the four boroughs of Bexley, Dartford, Gravesham and Sevenoaks. Its main objectives are:

  • To conserve and enhance the river corridors, the landscape and the wildlife of the area.
  • To promote countryside access for informal recreation.
  • To promote conservation grants and advise landowners and local authorities on issues of environmental management.
  • To provide an accessible and friendly contact point for local communities concerned with their environment.
  • To find and implement local solutions to problems of conflicting use of the countryside, liaise between different interest groups, and act as a catalyst for action.

A thriving band of volunteers, working with Project staff carry out much of the practical work on the ground. This can include woodland or pond work, working in school grounds, tree planting and river work amongst many others. The Project is always looking for other volunteers. Whether they help for just once a month, or each week, all are welcome. If you like a copy of Country Matters the Project's newsletter, and a calendar of events, then please give the office a call.

Free Tree Scheme

The Project operates a Free Tree Scheme whereby up to twenty small (90cm) bare-root trees, of species common to Kent, are available to members of the public free of charge. If any additional trees are required, these are available at reduced price. For existing woodlands and larger projects, we can help find grants and advise on management.
