At its meeting on November 3, 1999 the Transport Group decided to begin organising a Cycling Summit to be held in Spring 2000 in cooperation with the QED Health Group. Cycling, like walking and running, can be a healthy way of getting around that is kind to the environment, but at present there are many barriers in the local environment that make cycling far from healthy (and potentially very hazardous) for anyone who chooses to get out of the car and peddle. As the first step, the local cycling support group COGS will be invited to nominate the fifty worst blackspots for cyclists in the Borough. A summit will follow in the Spring, to which cyclists, officials with responsibilities for the planning and maintenance of roads and pathways, safety experts and anyone else who is interested will be invited to help formulate an action plan, and follow it through with campaigns and monitoring to ensure the plan is put into effect and continuously updated. Keep an eye open here for updates in the coming months ...
