Notes from the Meeting of the QED Waste and Pollution Group, 26 May 1999

 

Present: David Meade (Woodlands Trust, Chair), Barbara Judge (Dartford UNA), Steve Weiss (National Power), Richard Wiltshire (QED Allotments), Julie Morton (QED Chairperson), Mike Pratt (Dartford Borough Council).

1) Apologies for Absence: Eric Tomlinson (Dartford Paper Mills) and John Prance (Dartford Borough Council).

2) Minutes / Matters Arising:

Reference to Axa Nobel should read Akzo Nobel.

Darent Valley LEAP - It is anticipated that there will be a presentation on the LEAP in the near future. All those people who have registered an interest will be invited to attend.

Pumpkin Competition - Packs have gone out to schools.

New Residents' Welcome Pack - Julie is to be the focus for the Waste Group. Whilst Mike Pratt is willing to get involved with the project he is not prepared to lead. If a "leader" cannot be found then the project may have to be shelved. This matter is to be referred back to the Steering Group.

National Spring Clean - The Chairman reported that he had contacted the Dartford Heath Ranger about QED involvement on the Heath but no action had been taken.

- Tredegar Allotments signed up and were provided with a skip as they requested.

- John Prance sent apologies for the non arrival of a skip which had been booked for Wilmington but which was not delivered.

Comments on the DETR Air Quality Document - No comments had been made.

Swanscombe & Greenhithe Tree Planting - Had gone ahead as planned although poor weather on the day had somewhat dampened the proceedings.

3) Dartford Festival: It was agreed that the Waste Group should not do anything specific for the Festival. The intention would be to link in with the general QED material and the KCC Waste and Recycling Display that John Prance had booked. The general QED material would focus on the achievements of QED. This will in turn link in with any material displayed by Dartford Borough Council on Air Quality / Transport.

4) DETR Website: This will be reported to the Steering Group.

5) Recycling: The Chairman reported that he had been approached by a number of people about the various recycling schemes operating in other Boroughs and asked why Dartford only had limited recycling initiatives. The three particular enquiries related to:

It was agreed that John Prance would be asked to advise the group on how DBC is approaching recycling.

Richard Wiltshire asked that the Group noted the contribution of National Power for the assistance that had been given to Tredegar and Hawley Allotments in the provision of pallets.

It was agreed that DBC (John Prance) be asked to ensure the recycling points in the Borough are publicised at the Dartford Festival.

6) Environmental Monitoring: The review of the Environmental Audit was discussed. It was agreed that Duncan Philips should be asked to provide an update to the Group on the review and on Air Quality monitoring currently being undertaken..

7) Quality Indicators: The question of indicators was raised and in particular what local indicators are being used. In view of the previous item it was agreed that Duncan be asked to comment as part of the update.

8) Terms of Reference: The terms of reference of the group require amendment to include the pollution role transferred from the pollution group. The terms of reference of the Pollution group and the Waste Group were provided to the Chairman. The Chairman to amalgamate the terms of reference for bringing back to a future meeting.

9) Future Business:

Julie Morton is to progress the Light Pollution information sheet to use in conjunction with B&Q.

Richard Wiltshire reported that "Pallets and Barrels" will continue.

10) Other Business:

The Kent Reduction of Waste Network is seeking members. It was agreed that this should be referred to the Steering Group for consideration.

Barbara Judge raised the UNED UK conference in June and stressed that it would be useful if someone could attend. Details had been previously circulated to Group members.

11) Future Meetings: It was confirmed that the next meeting will be 7 July 1999 at 7.30pm in the Civic Centre, Home Gardens Dartford Kent.
