Cleaning out the Garden
Shed? Found Something Nasty?
|
If it's a weedkiller, or a garden pesticide, or a
fertiliser you no longer need, please dispose of it safely. There is
a disposal facility for potentially dangerous chemicals at the Kent
County Council householders tip at Rochester Way, Dartford Heath.
You will be asked to identify the chemical if possible, to
ensure it is disposed of correctly, but the service is free, and it
is a far less polluting alternative than pouring it down the drain,
or throwing it in the wheely-bin, neither of which can be
recommended. And in the meantime, be sure to keep bottles and
packages out of the reach of children at all times.
If you are a gardener you can help to protect the
environment by only buying and applying as much weedkiller, pesticide
or fertiliser as you really need, and by using alternatives to
chemical treatments whenever possible - the hoe, mulch, traps and
composts.
If you have a particularly unusual chemical on which you
need advice, KCC "Chemsafe" staff would be pleased to give expert
help. They can be contacted on 01622 696821.
