ABOUT THE SOCIETY ...

Way back during the 1939/45 War the cry was "to dig for Victory" so a number of keen amateur horticulturalists formed a Committee with the idea of being able to purchase seeds, fertilisers, etc., in bulk, for the advantage of members of a Society then to be formed and called the West Dartford Allotment & Garden Society so that it covered agricultural needs for its members.

This Society has continued for 60 years and is still very active. It operates selling facilities in the Huts at the top of Devonshire Avenue which open at various times at week-ends for members, at an annual membership fee of £1.

The active Committee running the Society welcomes new and existing members who are willing to give up a little time to help each month at the Huts, and maybe join the Committee later.

Every Autumn we have a very comprehensive and successful Open Show covering flowers, vegetables, fruit, handicraft and culinary sections for adults and juniors with well over 100 classes of entry. This Show is run under the rules of the Royal Horticultural Society of which we are members. We are also members of the National Vegetable Society and the Kent Allotment and Gardens Council. Show Schedules etc. are readily available from the Officers or the Huts several weeks before Show time.

We also have planned Social evenings ranging from light entertainment to horticultural information.

Amongst its other activities the West Dartford Allotment and Garden Society organises days out at popular gardening venues for its members. In 1999 we went to the gardens at Sheffield Park, and on March 25, 2000 more than forty members enjoyed a day out at the Royal Horticultural Society's gardens at Wisley. WDAGS Secretary David Hinchcliffe is pictured beside Wisley's demonstration allotment garden.
