Vickers Viking
History
|
|
As World War 2 drew to its close the
designers at Vickers looked to the inevitable growth in postwar civil
aviation. Using their experience with the Wellington bomber they designed a
twin engined, 25 seat short haul aircraft. The Vikings entered service with
BEA in September 1946, operating between Northolt & Copenhagen. They finally
ventured all over the system as far as Cairo.
163 Vikings were built, other operators
were Aer Lingus, British West Indian Airways, Indian National Airways, South
African Airways, Danish Air Lines & others. Four RAF Vikings were used by
the Royal Flight. Two were converted as flying test beds for the Rolls Royce
Nene turbojets, becoming the World's first commercial jet aircraft. |
