The pioneering Comet, built by de ഀ
Havilland, was the world's first jet airliner. It was cutting edge ഀ
technology, designed to fly faster & also higher than earlier ഀ
aircraft, thanks to it's pressurized cabin. Unfortunately after entering ഀ
service in 1953, it was grounded the next year after a number of ഀ
catastrophic structural failures. After lengthy tests & modifications ഀ
the Comet was reintroduced, but it had lost it's head start over the newer ഀ
& more modern Boeing 707. |

The Comet ഀ 4C had the extended fuselage of the 4B & the longer wings & extra ഀ fuel tanks of the Comet 4. It entered service with Mexicana in 1960. By ഀ 1977 the only airline still operating the Comet was Dan-Air. They acquired ഀ 49 Comets in all, although most were used for spare parts, with only 19 ഀ ever in service at the same time. The last Dan-Air Comet was retired in ഀ 1980. The last airworthy Comet, a 4C XS235 'Canopus', has been kept in ഀ working order & it is planned that it will soon fly again in the ഀ colours of BOAC. | ഀ
